In response to recent tit-for-tat demonstrations in Stockholm, Sweden, Baghdad,Iraq and Tehran Iran, the far-right Danish group Dansk Patrioter, has decided to also burn the Quran in Copenhagen. At least one burning has already occurred in front of the Iraqi embassy, it is not currently clear if a burning has occurred in front of the Iranian embassy.
Over the past three weeks, after a legally sanctioned Quran burning in Stockholm, Sweden, Muslim counter-protestors demonstrated in front of, then burned the Swedish embassy in Baghdad. Iranian counter-protestors also demonstrated in front of the Swedish embassy in Tehran. However, the diplomatic relations between Baghdad and Stockholm have been the most significant casualty to these demonstrations, with both nations withdrawing their diplomatic personnel and Iraq going as far to threaten a cessation of relations.
The Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, had this to say over the Copenhagen burning:
“I condemn the kind of stupidity that a small handful of individuals did yesterday in front of the Iraqi embassy,” wrote Lars Løkke Rasmussen
COPENHAGEN, July 24 (Reuters) – A small group of protesters in Denmark on Monday set fire to a copy of the Koran, Islam's holy book, in front of the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen.
