Second Earthquake Hits Herat, Afghanistan

Update (2114 EST): The United States Geological Survey has issued an orange alert for the Herat area, projecting at least 1,000 casualties from the intense shaking and potential collapse. Tremors have been reported in Farah, Jowzjan, and Fariab.

On October 7th, 2023, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck 26km northwest of Qara Bagh, Afghanistan. Moments ago, a second 6.2 magnitude earthquake was detected 37km northwest of Herat.

The Taliban is reporting at least 4,000 people were killed or injured on October 7th. At least 12,000 have been displaced.

Government sources have not reported on the earthquake as of this publication. Social media posts are now emerging as people are hitting the streets amid tremors.
