At approximately 1005 EST, a major traffic incident was reported on I-55 near Hammond, Louisiana. Heavy fog obscured traffic conditions and a large fire erupted after an initial crash spread to other vehicles.

The Louisiana State Police has just announced that nine are confirmed dead and 25 have been hospitalized.
