Americans In Guatemala Caught Smuggling Historical Relics

Today, prosecutors in Guatemala stated that they have discovered 1,222 possible archeological artifacts at a home of an American couple. The couple has since been accused of smuggling historical relics.

Reportedly, the pieces range from small pottery to large stone carvings. Some items found are made of jade and basalt.

The Guatemalan prosecutors involved in this case stated that the raid, “represents a tough blow to a presumed ring dedicated to illegally trafficking cultural goods.”

In Guatemala, people caught smuggling relics and archaeological artifacts face between 5 and 10 years if convicted.
