Somalia’s Government on the Attack

In recent days the Somalian Government has began an offensive against Al-Shabaab militant cells, forcing them out of a number of towns. The offensives, backed by both the US and the African Union, are seeing widespread success and dealing a massive blow to Al-Shabaab, whom the US and many others deem a terror organization.

While these offensives are seeing success, some are questioning the governments ability to hold their newfound positions should Al-Shabaab be able to regroup. The government themselves is also asking that a UN arms embargo placed on Somalia be lifted, saying it restricts their ability to be able to fight against the terror groups that plague the nation.

Al-Shabaab regularly launches attacks against both government and civilians, so any blows to the group is sure to be a victory in the eyes of the government.
