Netanyahu fires Defense Minister Gallant After he Speaks out Against Reform Law

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has fired Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant after he spoke out against proposed judicial reforms backed by Netanyahu that would allow the Israeli government to appoint judges and override decisions made by the country’s Supreme Court. The proposals have led to weeks of protesting.

On Saturday, Gallant broke ranks from Netanyahu and called for the proposals to be paused “for the security of Israel,” adding that “the growing rift in our society is penetrating the IDF and security agencies. This poses a clear, immediate and tangible threat to the security of the state.” There have been reports of IDF soldiers refusing to train in protest of the proposals.
