Netanyahu Heads for Surgery, Justice Minister Named Acting Prime Minister

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to undergo surgery tonight to receive a pacemaker, at the advice of his doctors. Earlier in the month the PM suffered from heart problems which caused him to lose consciousness and hit his head. After that incident, he was given a cardiac monitoring device, which according to the PM detected an issue with his heartbeat, prompting doctors to insist he go in for surgery.

The PM stated he hopes to be out of the hospital by tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon, in time for Monday’s vote in the Knesset on the highly controversial judicial reform. A cabinet meeting, which was to be held tomorrow, has now been postponed due to the surgery.

Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin is serving as the active Prime Minister while PM Netanyahu is in for surgery.
