An armed attack took place on the Swedish consulate in Izmir, Turkey, resulting in the “serious injury” of one Turkish employee. The attack is being reported by some to have taken place using a firearm. The attacker, who Turkish authorities have taken to calling “mentally handicapped” (among other things), was taken into custody alongside his weapon.
The Izmir Governor’s Office released a statement, part of which may be read below:
“Our citizen named E.T. was injured as a result of the armed attack of the mentally disabled person named Z.O. in Konak district of our city on 01.08.”
No information has yet been released about the attacker, and any possible reasoning behind the attack, though an investigation has reportedly already begun.
