The United States Embassy in Minsk has issued an alert urging American citizens in Belarus to “depart immediately,” citing recent and potential future border closures with Lithuania, Poland, and Latvia.
The measures come as neighboring countries signal increased security threats due to the presence of Wagner Group fighters that are now based in Belarus following their mutiny in June.
Likewise, two Belarusian military helicopters crossed into Polish airspace earlier this month, prompting increased Polish military deployment around the border.
Alert for U.S. citizens: The Lithuanian government on August 18 closed border crossings with Belarus at Tverecius/Vidzy and Sumskas/Losha. Other border crossings remain open. Do not travel to Belarus. U.S. citizens in Belarus should depart immediately.https://t.co/kiZs4rkmQw
