Coup attempt in the African country of Gabon apparently, soldiers and military officers on TV have announced no more elections and dissolution of institutions. This comes after incumbent President Ali Bongo was just re-elected with reportedly 64% of the vote. A military coup also took place in 2019 when commanders tried to oust Bongo previously. Elections since 2017 have been disputed by opposition parties over Bongo’s presidency, who has been in power for 14 years.
Gunfire was briefly reportedly heard in the capital when soldiers stormed government buildings. Borders closed according to military on TV. Gabon military coup forces claim they represent all of the security and defense forces.
