Moments ago, initial reports indicated that Dominican Republic President Abinader has ordered his government to close the country’s border with Haiti beginning tomorrow on September 15th at 0600 local time.
Yesterday, Haitian officials met with Dominican officials to resolve a dispute over a canal that was being dug on the Haitian side of the Massacre River. Dominican President Abinader announced that if an agreement were not reached by today, then he would order the closure. This canal reportedly will damage water flow and other environmental concerns that will harm Dominican farmers. The last time that the border was closed was after the assassination of Haitian President Moise in 2021.
