Russia’s Ministry of defense has announced that an unspecified number of peacekeepers were killed when their vehicle came under fire while leaving an observation post in Nagorno-Karabakh. In a statement, the Ministry said that “representatives of the investigative authorities of Russia and Azerbaijan are working at the scene of the incident.”
The shooting appears to have been first reported yesterday by Armenian journalist Tatum Hakobyan, who posted to Facebook that a peacekeeper convoy came under fire while evacuating civilians from villages in the region.
The exact number of peacekeepers that were killed remains unknown. While Russia did not say who opened fire on the vehicle, the incident came as Azerbaijani military forces carried out extensive shelling against Artsakh positions and cities across the region.
