Taliban Delegation set to Meet with Russian Officials for Afghan Format Meeting

Acting Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has left Kabul to meet with Russian officials in Moscow before traveling to Kazan, Tatarstan, for the Moscow Format on Afghanistan.

The Moscow Format was established in 2017 as a meeting between special envoys of Russia, India, Iran, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan to discuss economic, political, and security issues involving Afghanistan.

This marks the first inclusion of the Taliban government since the fall of Afghanistan in 2021. A Taliban ministry spokesman said that Muttaqi will discuss “various political and economic issues” at the meeting. Since the takeover, the Taliban has tried to legitimize itself on the global playing field to increase foreign investments and aid.
