USNI News, citing unnamed defense officials, has reported that U.S. Marine Commandant Eric Smith was hospitalized following a suspected heart attack.
Earlier today, the Marine Corps announced that General Smith had suffered an unspecified medical emergency and did comment on his current condition.
Lieutenant General Heckl is now acting Commandant since no Vice Commandant is in place. Lieutenant General Karsten Heckl currently serves as the Commanding General, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, and the Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration.
