Yonhap: North Korea Fired 200 Artillery Shells Near Yeonpyeong Island, South Korea

South Korea media outlet Yonhap has reported that North Korea has fired 200 artillery shells off of its west coast near the island of Yeonpyeong, which sits just 12km from the border.

The outlet previously reported that the island was issued an urgent evacuation order due to “a situation related to the provocation of North Korea and that a maritime strike on the island was being carried out.”

No indication at this time that the island was hit.

There has also been confusion as island officials told South Korea newspaper JoongAng that the evacuations were due to South Korean Marine Corps drills and not DPRK shelling.
