On January 15, the military chief of the Philippines Romeo Brawner announced that the Philippines plans to develop outposts in the South China Sea.

The Philippine military has selected nine “features” in Philippine territory for development, aiming to increase their habitability for troops.

Brawner also announced the Philippine military is shifting its focus toward territorial security instead of internal defense.

As part of it’s military modernization efforts, the Philippines plans to acquire two additional Jose Rizal-class frigates, radars, fighter jets, missile systems, and submarines to counter Chinese posturing in the South China Sea, as reported by Defense News.

This follows multiple incidents in the South China Sea between Chinese and Philippine naval assets in the region.
