India Planning to Replace Troops in the Maldives with Civilians by Early Summer

By March 15th, Indian troops that are currently stationed in the Maldives will be removed from the region. The process will begin on March 10th, marking the start of a greater and more prosperous relationship between both the Maldives and India. There are about 80 troops in that region, which will all be replaced with civilian personnel.

The troops in that region were in charge of a variety of tasks but specifically managed humanitarian aid, intelligence, and search and rescue operations. This small step is part of a more significant plan to move forward to secure the longevity of peace in the region. This comes at a time when China and India are competing for influence in the Maldives and Indian Ocean Region.
