Philippine Government to Set up Centers for Marine Research

The Department of Environmental and Natural Resources of the Philippine government is establishing two marine research centers in Cayagan and Palawan provinces. The facilities aim to serve as a foundational element for fostering increased interest in oceanic science.

“Sta. Ana, Cagayan, will be the northernmost site serving as a sentinel, covering the Northern Philippine Sea marine biogeographic region,” stated Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, one of the Chiefs of the DENR.

This will be the sixth marine research center built in the Philippines, enhancing government spending in this sector and effectively allocating resources for the research and development of marine studies.

The Department plans to also set up another marine research center in Palawan province to serve the South China Sea.
