Texas Wildfires Force Shutdown of Nuclear Weapon Facility

On February 27, it was reported that wildfires in the Texas Panhandle had forced the evacuation of most staff from the Pantex plant. The plant is located northeast of Amarillo.

The Pantex plant has been the main U.S. site for assembling and disassembling atomic bombs.

By the early morning of February 28, the plant had announced that it had resumed business operations and that no nuclear material was ever in danger due to the fires.

The fires in the region are the 2nd largest in Texas history, surpassing 500,000 acres on February 28.

The fires continue to affect several communities in the region, causing the Governor of Texas to issue a disaster declaration.
