Sunak Pushing for New Measures Against Chinese Entities

On Monday, the UK government released a report exposing Chinese hackers as the perpetrators behind cyber attacks targeting UK parliament members and Britain’s Electoral Commission.

On Tuesday, Sunak issued a statement in response to the report, emphasizing that the UK was already taking measures to combat Chinese cyber criminal activity. Moving forward, the Prime Minister plans to crack down specifically on Chinese entities operating in the UK. New measures could include requiring any Chinese operations deemed a threat to Britain’s national security to register their activities with the UK Parliament.

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden emphasized that there is an argument to be made for China to be deemed a greater modern risk to Britain under the 2023 National Security Act. This would place China into an “enhanced Tier,” categorizing them as a threat to the safety and security of the British Government.
