Senior U.S. Official Comments on Russian LNG Developments

A senior Washington official, Geoffrey Pyatt, has stated that the nation is “very focused on ensuring” that Moscow will be limited in their ability to develop new liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects. The U.S. official is the US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources.

This comes as Russia’s LNG export value rose by 4.3% in the first quarter of 2024. European countries remain the most significant buyers of Russian LNG, while sales to Asia have slightly decreased by 7% during the same period.

The U.S. is looking to block any future increase in the value of Russian LNG. This will most likely come in the form of sanctions in an attempt to punish Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
