Kyiv’s Largest Power Plant Destroyed In Russian Airstrikes

On April 12, the largest power plant in the Kyiv region of Ukraine was destroyed due to a large airstrike by Russian forces, according to CNN.

The Ukraine Air Force said that it shot down 18 missiles and 39 drones used in the attack. Russia fired 82 missiles and drones in total, according to CNN.

The Trypilska Thermal Power Plant (TPP), is the largest supplier of electricity to the Kyiv region. The plant was completely destroyed according to Centrenergo, the company that owns the plant.

The company also released a statement that said that “the scale of the destruction is terrible. Money can’t estimate it. This is the biggest challenge for us in the history of the company”.

After the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky released a statement saying “All of our European neighbors and other partners see Ukraine’s critical need for air defense systems” and that Ukraine’s allies have turned “a blind eye” to the security needs of Ukraine.

This comes as shipments of security aid to Ukraine have slowed in recent months, and Russian advances have increased according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
