Lockheed Wins $17 Billion Next Generation Interceptor Contract

The United States Missile Defense Agency (MDA) announced that Lockheed Martin has been awarded the contract to continue development of the Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) program, which Reuters reported as being worth $17 billion.

The Department of Defense aims to have the NGI operational by 2028, which will be integrated into the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) weapon system for “countering ballistic missiles in the inventories of our adversaries today and for decades to come.”

According to Lockheed, the “The multiple-kill vehicle interceptor is designed to protect the homeland against long range ballistic missile threats from rogue nations.”
