Following his meeting with NATO Deputy Secretary General, Mircea Geoana, the Argentinian Minister of Defence, Luis Petri, has announced that Argentina has submitted an application to become a NATO ‘Global Partner’. Within his announcement, Petri stated Argentina’s intention to “modernize and train our forces to NATO standards.”

A global partner of NATO is not a full member of the organization, but rather a nation which NATO cooperates with on a regular basis. Nations such as Japan, Australia, and South Korea (among several others) are all NATO global partners.
