UN Aid Worker Killed in Gaza

The UN has announced the death of one of their aid workers in Gaza. The worker belonged to the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS).

The UN’s statement said the worker was killed, and another injured, “when their UN vehicle was struck as they traveled to the European Hospital in Rafah this morning.” The statement does not explicitly state who was responsible, though Gaza’s government media office directly blamed Israel.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for an investigation into the attack, as well as all previous attacks on UN staff members.

More than 230 humanitarian aid workers, primarily from the UNRWA, have been killed within Gaza since the war began on October 7th. The war is the UN’s deadliest year on record, and is getting close to surpassing the UN’s conflict fatalities record in Syria, where 320 UN workers were killed from 2011-2021.
