Slovakian media have initially identified the gunman involved in the attempted assassination of Prime Minister Robert Fico in the town of Handlova as Juraj Cintula, 71, who was immediately arrested following the shooting.
A motive has not been confirmed.
Fico remains in critical condition after receiving multiple gunshot wounds and was airlifted to Banska Bystrica for emergency surgery.
