Iranian Vice President Mokhber Temporarily Assumes Presidency

Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei has announced that Vice President Mohkber will assume the role of the presidency after the death of President Raisi in a helicopter crash in Western Azerbaijan Province yesterday.

His announcement reads below:

“I announce 5 days of public mourning and express my condolences to the dear people of Iran. According to Article 131 of the Constitution, Mr. Mokhbar is in the position of managing the executive branch, and he is obliged to arrange with the heads of the legislative and judicial branches to elect a new president within a maximum of 50 days.”

Ali Bagheri Kani will assume the role of Foreign Minister following the death of Hossein Amir Abdollahian in the same crash.

Interim President Mokhber has already convened his first meeting in his capacity as president with Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf and Chief Justice Mohseni-Ejei.
