Vuhlehirska Power Station On Fire After Shelling, Donetsk

The Vuhlehirska Power Station has reportedly been struck by Russian artillery fire and a large conflagration has broken out at the plant. The plant is still under Ukrainian control in Svitlodarsk, Donetsk Oblast.

Vuhlehirska power station (also known as Vuhlehirska TES) is a coal- fueled thermal power station located in Svitlodarsk, Ukraine.

It consists of 7 units with a total power output of 3,600 MW and was put in service between 1972 and 1977. Vuhlehirska power station has a 320 metres (1,050 ft) tall flue gas stack, which is one of the tallest structures in Ukraine. Since August 1995 the power station is operated by Centrenergo.

On March 22nd, 2020 the plant went offline due to a lack of natural gas, which until the invasion was supplied by Russia. This fire and already sustained damage is sure to knock the plant offline for an extended period of time, perhaps permanently.
