Attack Underway At Kuje Medium Security Prison, Nigeria

Update (0841 EST 06JUL22): 64 Boko Haram militants have been confirmed freed from the prison, as per the Nigerian Minister of Defense.

Update (0557 EST 06JUL22): Nigerian Correctional services says more than 700 prisoners have been freed by Boko Haram attack with an known number of personnel at the prison killed.

Security forces are currently responding to gunfire and explosions at the Kuje Medium Security Prison in Kuje, Nigeria.

From local media on scene: “The first explosion, a high capacity bomb, went off around 10.25pm. It was followed by second and third blast and sporadic gunshots that left the residents scampering into safety.
Few hours earlier, security report had alerted the prison officials of possible attacks of the medium prison.

A prison staff, who confirmed the attack in a chat with Daily Sun, explained that the attackers had come from the back of the prison yard.”

Additionally, two members of the Nigerian Presedntial motorcade were injured in an ambush by militants near Dutsin-ma in Katsina State. From the Presidents office:

“The Presidency has described as sad and unwelcome, the shooting incident near Dutsinma, Katsina State, at the convoy of cars carrying the Advance Team of security guards, protocol and media officers ahead of the President, Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to Daura for Sallah.

The attackers opened fire on the convoy from ambush positions but were repelled by the military, police and DSS personnel accompanying the convoy.

Two persons in the convoy are receiving treatment for the minor injuries they suffered. All the other personnel, staff and vehicles made it safely to Daura.”
