ATMIS Troops Killed, Suicide Bombing, Mogadishu

Update (1112 EST): Local Somali media now reporting three civilians injured. Initial reports documenting the death of two ATMIS troops seem to be erroneous. We will update as more information becomes available from the Somali government.

Update (0810 EST): At least two have been reported KIA. No word yet on nationality.

Several casualty reports are coming in after a complex attack initiated by a suicide bomber struck an African Union Transition Mission in Somalia convoy in the KM4 area of Mogadishu, Somalia. The initial attack took place at approximately 0715 EST near the Criminal Investigative Department building.

No definitive word yet on casualties.

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is an active African Union transition and drawdown mission from peacekeeping operations in Somalia. Formerly the African Union Mission to Somalia, ATMIS’s mandate will end in 2024, with full transition of security operations to the Somali National Armed Forces. ATMIS consists of troops from the East African nations of Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda.
