Volcano Erupts, Emergency Crews Flee Grindavik, Iceland

As this publication reported on November 10th, 2023, the entire population of Grindavik, Iceland was evacuated due to tectonic and volcanic activity under the city. That volcano has finally erupted.

At approximately 1750 EST, eyewitnesses reported lava plumes shooting more than 400 feet in the air. Emergency crews and law enforcement that had established the evacuation cordon around the city have now fled to fall-back positions. The entire population of 3200 people has already been evacuated.

Grindavikurvegur road to the city is now impassible. No employees or contractors are at the Svartsengi Geothermal Powerplant.

This is developing.
