Germany Extends Operation of Three Nuclear Powerplants through Winter

The German government has decided to extend operation of Nuclear Power Plants Isar 2, Neckarwestheim 2, and Emsland until May 15th, 2023. This decision was made to ease the harsh Winter expected after the EU enforced price caps on Russian oil. Those price increases stemmed from reduced supply and heightened demand amid global sanctions against the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine. 2011 Nuclear Energy Act (Atomgesetz) was passed to shut down all NPPs by December 2022.
