Ukraine and Russia Prisoner Swap

Russia and Ukraine continue to swap prisoners with each other, in a rare show of goodwill between the two nations.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement, “On January 8, as a result of negotiations, 50 Russian servicemen, who were in mortal danger while in captivity, were returned from the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime.”

Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, confirmed this statement on Twitter, saying, “Another successful POWs (prisoners of war) swap. 50 Ukrainian soldiers are back.”

On January 11 the Russian Human Rights Commissioner, Tatyana Moskalkova, said an additional agreement has been reached after a meeting in Ankara, Turkey with her Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Lubinets.

“It is very important that the ombudsmen of Ukraine and Russia, in the absence of diplomatic relations, take concrete actions to help people,” Moskalkova told reporters.
