New footage from the Uvalde shooting in Texas shows law enforcement standing outside the school while at the same time the killer was reportedly rampaging inside. Parents and onlookers desperately urge and plead for the police to charge into the building, while police pull out their tasers in response, even pinning one parent to the ground. Some of these parents would later discover their children were slain in the massacre. Despite having reportedly exchanging gunfire with the shooter before he went into the school, law enforcement would only go into the school to raid the classroom he barricaded himself in, after roughly 40 minutes to an hour into the shooting.
Furthermore, according to one 4th grade child’s account, police/BORTAC (Border Patrol Tactical Unit) actions within the building led to the death of a student. “When the cops came, the cop said: ‘Yell if you need help!’ And one of the persons in my class said ‘help.’ The [shooter] overheard and he came in and shot her,” the boy said. “Go in there! Go in there!” a woman shouted to officers soon after the shooting happened, witness Juan Carranza, 24, said. He lives across the street from the school. “There were more of them. There was just one of him,” he said. Javier Cazares raced to the school after hearing about the shooting because his daughter went to school there. He said he suggested a group of civilians “rush in because the cops aren’t doing anything like they are supposed to. More could have been done. They were unprepared.” His daughter, Jacklyn Cazares, died in the attack.
Timeline follows that at 11:32am, the shooting takes place at Robb Elementary School, shortly after law-enforcement engages with the shooter outside. At 12.17pm, the school posts a message on social media writing advising parents of the active shooter situation, prompting parents to show up. It’s only until 1.06pm, that the Uvalde Police Department reports the suspect is ‘in police custody.’
Robb Elementary school district has its own police department with 5 cops, in a city where the Police Department received just under 40% of the entire city’s budget. The school had an armed guard who reportedly was not inside the school at the time.
Officials say the shooter “encountered” a school district security officer outside the school, though there were conflicting reports from authorities on whether the men exchanged gunfire. After running inside, the gunman fired on two arriving Uvalde police officers who were outside the building, said Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Travis Considine. The police officers were injured. The shooter then went inside a classroom and began killing. The gunman wasn’t killed for the better part of an hour until a Border Patrol team tactical unit arrived and shot him. Border Patrol agents were in the area because Uvalde is near the Mexican border. A person who spoke on condition of anonymity said Border Patrol had trouble opening the locked door and a staff member had to get a key.
Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said the gunman could have been in the school for 40 minutes to an hour. But he said the officers stayed outside. McCraw told reporters that this time elapsed from when Ramos opened fire on the school security officer to when the tactical team shot him, though a department spokesman said later that they could not give a solid estimate of how long the gunman was in the school or when he was killed. “The bottom line is law enforcement was there,” McCraw said. “They did engage immediately. They did contain (the shooter) in the classroom.” That classroom was the one where 19 children and 2 teachers lost their lives.
A fourth grader who survived the mass shooting at Robb Elementary has shared gut-wrenching details about what he witnessed inside that classroom. “He shot the next person’s door. We have a door in the middle. He opened it. He came in and he crouched a little bit and he said, he said, ‘It’s time to die,'” the boy recalled. “When I heard the shooting through the door, I told my friend to hide under something so he won’t find us,” he said. “I was hiding hard. And I was telling my friend to not talk because he is going to hear us.”
The boy and four others hid under a table that had a tablecloth over it, which may have shielded them from the shooter’s view and saved their lives. The boy shared heartbreaking details about what happened in that room.
“When the cops came, the cop said: ‘Yell if you need help!’ And one of the persons in my class said ‘help.’ The guy overheard and he came in and shot her,” the boy said. “The cop barged into that classroom. The guy shot at the cop. And the cops started shooting.” He said that once the shooting stopped, he came out from under the table. “I just opened the curtain. And I just put my hand out,” he said. “I got out with my friend. I knew it was police. I saw the armor and the shield.”
