The Dresden Peace Prize has been awarded to Alexey Navalny, posthumously, by the Association Friends of Dresden Germany. The announcement reads below:

Germania Online also announced that:

“The Dresden Peace Prize Initiative, the Dresden State Theater and the Ecumenical Information Center will provide further information next Monday, 8 April.

Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, a longtime and ardent opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died in a penal camp above the Arctic Circle on February 16, 2024. So far, it has not been possible to establish whether the 47-year-old politician died due to the conditions of detention in the colony or was killed.

The Dresden Prize is awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to peace and international understanding. Previous laureates include former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, war photographer James Nachtwei and military analyst Daniel Ellsberg.”

The prize is sponsored by the Klaus Tschira Foundation. Navalny’s widow will reportedly receive the award in her husband’s place. The award began in 2009, the list of awardees reads below:

2010:  Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the Soviet Union.

2011: Daniel Barenboim, conductor and pianist.

2012: James Nachtwey, War Photographer

2013: Stanislav Petrov, former officer of the Soviet Army.

2014: Emmanuel Jal, Sudanese musician and former child soldier.

2015: Edward, Duke of Kent, member of the British Royal Family.

2016: Daniel Ellsberg.

2017: Domenico Lucano, Mayor of Riace.

2018: Tommie Smith, Olympic champion and civil rights fighter.

2019: Phan Th? Kim Phúc, victim of the Vietnam War.

2020: Muzoon Almellehan, Syrian education activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

2021: Cristina Marin Campos, physician.

2022: Roger Cox, lawyer representing the plaintiffs against Royal Dutch Shell.

2023:  Daniel Libeskind, architect.
