The European Union Council has announced the decision to open up accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, as well as grant candidate status for Georgia.
Back in June, 2022, the Council granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate status following improvements aligned with the EU acquis, which are a set of rules that make up EU law that are required to be followed by member states.
At the time, the Council stated that it was ready to grant Georgia candidate status “once the outstanding priorities are addressed,” which were “further reforms are needed to improve the functioning of its market economy.” The move to grant candidate status has shown that these issues were addressed by the Georgian government.
