Earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

Just before dawn on Monday a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook northwestern Papua New Guinea. The tremor hit at a depth of 62 kilometers (38.53 miles) just after 4:00 AM local time, according to the US Geological survey.

The area most affected is sparsely populated, but will be subjected to loosening ground which may cause landslides and building collapses.

No tsunami alert has been issued.

The center of the earthquake occurred 97 kilometers (60.27 miles) from the coastal town of Wewak. (Google Maps)
