Shia Islam in Afghanistan is practiced by a significant minority of the population; estimates put their number at 10%-20%. Afghanistan’s Shia is primarily the Twelvers, while a minority are Ismailis. ISIS, which is Sunni has carried out some of its worst massacres against Shia Muslims, one of the most notable being on 12 June 2014, when ISIL killed 1,700 unarmed Shia Iraqi Army cadet recruits in the Camp Speicher massacre.

The Taliban has struggled to maintain control in Northern Afghanistan as both ISIS, their affiliates, and the Afghan National Resistance Front take their toll on the beleaguered Taliban military. However, the Taliban have shown some modernization in their use of Assault Support tactics using repurposed helicopters left behind after America’s dramatic withdrawal in the Fall of 2021.
