Over 125 People Killed in Stampede at Indonesia Soccer Match

Date:

At least 125 people are dead and nearly 200 others were left injured following a riot and subsequent stampede at a soccer match in East Java, Indonesia.

Authorities and local media reported that fans of Arema FC, the home team, rushed the field after a 2-3 loss to Persebaya Surabaya, where riot police fired tear gas and clashed with fans on the pitch. The deployment of tear gas caused panic amongst the crowds in the stands, leading to a mass stampede. Meanwhile, supporters of both teams fought each other. Most of the victims were killed or injured by being trampled.

In response to the incident, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) suspended all soccer matches for the next week, as well as banning Arema FC from hosting home games for the remainder of the season. PSSI released a statement saying that it “regrets the actions of Aremania supporters at the Kanjuruhan Stadium” and that the incident “tarnished the face of Indonesian football,” adding that an investigation will be launched.

Likewise, the Indonesian sports and youth minister, Zainudin Amali, told local broadcaster Kompas that “We will thoroughly evaluate the organization of the match and the attendance of supporters. Will we return to banning supporters from attending the matches? That is what we will discuss.”
