Chicago police say that six people, including a 19-year-old woman, have been killed and at least 32 others injured in shootings across the city this weekend. Last weekend, at least 58 people were shot in Chicago, nine of them fatally.

Three people were also injured in a parking lot outside Six Flags Great America in Gurnee when shots were fired from a vehicle, according to a spokesperson for the park, which is located about 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Chicago. The vehicle immediately drove away. No other details were provided.

In Chicago, a 32-year-old man is dead after he was shot during a verbal altercation in the 1100 block of North Ridgeway, according to police. Authorities say the man got into an argument with another individual, who then pulled out a weapon and opened fire, striking the victim in the leg. Police say he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 17-year-old girl was shot in the back, and was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Three other victims, a 17-year-old boy, an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, were all taken to area hospitals in fair condition. No suspects are in custody, and police are continuing to investigate.

Early Saturday morning, one person was shot and killed and a second sustained injuries at approximately 6:04 a.m. in the 9400 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, according to law enforcement. An unknown man and 28-year-old male were walking outside when an unidentified offender approached and fired shots in their direction. The 28-year-old man was shot in the arm and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The second victim sustained a graze wound to the left side of his head and refused EMS on scene.

At approximately 5:17 a.m. Saturday in the 3900 block of West Fillmore, a 19-year-old man was found fatally shot with a gunshot wound to his chest, authorities said. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police.

In a separate incident, a 62-year-old man was fatally shot at approximately 11:09 p.m. Friday in the 800 block of West 71st Street, authorities said. The victim was sitting in his vehicle at a stop sign when someone fired shots. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

In the first deadly incident of the weekend, a 38-year-old man died from injuries suffered in a shooting at approximately 10:38 p.m. in the 500 block of West 95th Street, police said. The victim was driving when an unknown man fired shots from the sidewalk. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was pronounced dead.

While Chicago is on pace for more than 600 homicides in 2022, the number of shootings and killings through the first half of the year are both down more than 10% compared to each of the last two years, according to police. Data published Friday by the Chicago Police Department shows there have been 310 homicides and 1,255 shootings in the city through the end of June. Both those figures are below the pace set through the first six months of 2021 and 2020.

According to that data, homicides this year are down 10% compared to the same time last year. Shootings are also down 17% this year, and the number of shooting victims in 2022 is down by more than 300 (1,525 this year, 1,860 last year). In June alone, there were 67 homicides. That’s down 21% compared to June 2021, according to police.

Police this year have recovered 6,205 firearms, a 5% increase over last year’s pace. Those weapons include more than 500 assault weapons and nearly 400 unserialized ghost guns. Despite Illinois having some of the most strict gun laws in the nation, firearms still show up aplenty, and more then often, not from Illinois. ATF Trace data shows the top five states where guns recovered in Illinois were originally purchased from are Illinois (49.8%), Indiana (16.7%), Missouri (5.4%), Wisconsin (3.9%) and Kentucky (2.6%). Federal agents at the ATF identified the source state of 11,708 traced firearms in 2020. Where as 50% of guns recovered in Illinois where from out-of-state in 2020, in 2017 that was 60%.

Last year, police seized more than 300 “ghost” guns in Baltimore, 455 in Chicago and 225 in New York City, according to the respective police departments. According to the LAPD, the department recovered 1,921 ghost guns in 2021, more than double the 813 ghost guns recovered in 2020. A representative from the department told CNN the LAPD did not begin separately tracking the number of ghost guns recovered until 2020, further underscoring how quickly ghost guns have proliferated throughout the city.

From what I’ve observed in the criminal use and obtaining of firearms in the past several years, the numbers of 3D-printed “ghost guns”, whether partially or entirely printed, will increase as criminal organizations and individuals become more accustomed to technology and utilize its accessibility and anonymity.
