Ukraine Sentences Citizen to Life in Prison for Collaborating in 2023 Russian Missile Strike on Pizzeria

The Ukrainian Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Officer has sentenced a Ukrainian citizen to life imprisonment and confiscated his property after collaborating with the Russian Federation in a missile strike on the RIA Pizzeria in Kramatorsk, Donetsk, Ukraine on June 27th, 2023.

The announcement reads below:

“Prosecutors of the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office proved in court the guilt of a resident of Kramatorsk of high treason (Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). He was sentenced to life imprisonment with confiscation of property.”

The court found that the man provided targeting data on Ukrainian troop position to the Intelligence Department of the Internal Troops Command of the Donetsk People’s Republic (Russian separatists). At the direction of his handlers, the convicted provided location data and kept a record of Ukrainian military vehicles in the city via Telegram.

The Strike

On June 27th, 2023, the convicted provided pictures and textual information of Ukrainian troops gathering at the RIA Pizzeria in Kramatorsk which was developed for an Iskander missile strike. Thirteen people were killed, including Ukrainian novelist Victoria Amelina, a 17-year-old girl, a pair of 14-year-old twin sisters and Ian Tortorici, a US Marine Corps veteran, while 61 were injured in the explosions. The restaurant was popular among locals, soldiers, foreign correspondents and aid workers. Among the injured were Colombian novelist and journalist Héctor Abad Faciolince and his friend Sergio Jaramillo Caro. Kramatorsk was 24 kilometers from the battle front at the time.
