Two weeks ago, the nation gathered to vote in the initial election for both the president and parliament. However, with none of the candidates reaching a 50% majority, the country was set for a runoff election scheduled for May 28.

As the people of Turkey gathered once more for their presidential election, many wondered if the incumbent, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, would be able to maintain his decades-long leadership. However, with the announcement last week that third-party candidate Sinan Ogan will endorse Erdogan, it is expected that his 5% share of the vote will tip the scales in the current president’s favor.

Polling has closed, and vote counting was expedient. As of 3:51 a.m. local time, 99.85% of the votes have been tallied, with the two main election sources putting Erdogan on top with roughly 85% voter turnout.

State media Anadolu reports:

ERDOGAN : 52.16%

KILICDAROGLU : 47.84%

Opposition media Anka reports:

ERDOGAN : 52.17%

KILICDAROGLU : 47.83%

With the results now counted, the Supreme Election Council (YSK) has officially announced Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the President of the Republic of Türkiye.
