Afghan Students Protest After Women Are Banned From Universities

Date:

Protests are being held across Afghanistan after the Taliban’s announcement that women would no longer be able to attend university. Videos show that male students of Nangarhar University are walking out of the institution and refusing to sit exams in solidarity with their female students. Female students can also be seen protesting outside the university.

Videos have also surfaced of female students being turned away from their university in the capital Kabul and are left weeping after. One student told the BBC “They have destroyed the only bridge that could connect me with my future.”

The announcement yesterday is part of a wave of measures put in place by the Taliban, who took over Afghanistan in 2021, which suppress the rights of women. The Taliban had already banned girls from attending secondary schools.
