Russian Mass Strikes On Ukraine Continue With New Commander

Date:

Today, the new general appointed by Russia a few days ago, Surovikin, continued to inflict cruise missile and ballistic missile strikes onto Ukrainian infrastructure, troops, weapon depots and communications.

The following cities in Ukraine were hit reportedly:

  •  Kyiv
  •  Kryvyi Rih
  •  Lviv
  •  Kremenchuk
  •  Pavlohrad
  •  Rivne
  •  Odessa (Oblast)
  •  Vinnytsia

Strikes on important objects reportedly:

  • Railway station with an accumulation of new equipment received by Ukraine (Pavlohrad)
  • Shepetovsky railway junction and repair shop in Khmelnytskyi Oblast
  • Ladyzhynska TPP put out of action (Vinnytsia)
  • CHP power plant in Lviv
  • Hydro electric power plant in Kyiv

Surovikin, a veteran of the Soviet-Afghan War, who also held command positions from the 1990s onward, has been largely attributed to the new wave of mass missile attacks on Ukraine. Previously he was thought of playing a significant role in regaining territory in Syria and turning the tide against opposition forces when he commanded Russian troops there. Earlier in this war he commanded Group South.

He is accused of having ordered troops to open fire on pro-democracy protestors in Moscow, during the August 1991 Soviet coup d’état attempt, when three people were killed. Surovikin was jailed for six months but was later released without trial by order of President Boris Yeltsin. In 1995, Surovikin was found guilty of illegal arms trade. He was sentenced but later let off following allegations that he had been framed.

An October 2020 Human Rights Watch report listed Surovikin as one of the commanders “who may bear command responsibility for violations” during the 2019–2020 offensive in Idlib, Syria. In addition he was in charge of setting up the Main Directorate of Military Police within Russian forces in 2011.

Several Russian infrastructure and agricultural areas were targeted by Ukrainian forces conversely today, resulting in destruction of agricultural tanks and loss of power to a few thousand residents in Belgorod Oblast.
